Sweet Chili Sauce

Total Time: 15 mins Difficulty: Beginner
A glossy homemade chili sauce with bold heat, garlic depth, and a perfectly balanced sweet finish.

This Sweet Chili Sauce is one of those essential homemade condiments that instantly upgrades everything it touches. With fiery chili flakes, mellow garlic, and a glossy sweet base, this sauce strikes that perfect balance between heat, sweetness, and savory depth. It’s bold without being overpowering, sticky without being heavy, and incredibly versatile.

Inspired by the sweet-heat sauces commonly used across Asian kitchens, especially for wings, fried chicken, shrimp, and stir-fries this version leans on simple pantry ingredients and a quick stovetop method. The sugar melts into the liquid to form a syrupy base, while soy sauce and vinegar add just enough saltiness and tang to keep the flavors balanced.

This sauce is ideal for meal prep and batch cooking. It thickens beautifully, coats the back of a spoon, and cools into a pourable, glossy condiment that stores well. Whether you’re glazing wings, tossing noodles, spooning it over rice, or using it as a dipping sauce, this Sweet Chili Sauce delivers that crave-worthy sweet-and-hot contrast every time.

Ingredients

For Thickening

Instructions

  1. Add the chili flakes, sugar, water, vinegar, paprika, soy sauce, minced garlic, salt, and chili powder to a medium saucepan set over medium-high heat.
  2. Stir continuously as the mixture heats, allowing the sugar to fully dissolve while bringing the sauce to a gentle simmer.
  3. Once simmering, reduce the heat slightly and let the sauce cook for 4–5 minutes, stirring often until fragrant and slightly reduced.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water to form a smooth slurry.
  5. Slowly pour the slurry into the simmering sauce while stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to low and continue simmering until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
  6. Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool completely before transferring to a clean jar or airtight container. Store in a cool, dry place or refrigerate for longer shelf life.
  7. Makes apprx 1 1/2 -2 cups of Sweet Chili Sauce

Note

Adjust the heat level by increasing or decreasing the chili flakes.

For a smoother sauce, blend after cooling.

This sauce thickens more as it cools, so avoid over-thickening on the stove.

Store refrigerated for up to 3–4 weeks.

Perfect for wings, shrimp, tofu, roasted vegetables, noodles, or as a dipping sauce.
