Provision Garden Pie is a Caribbean Shepherd’s Pie with a veggie-friendly twist, replacing traditional minced meat with a deeply seasoned pigeon pea and chickpea filling and swapping plain mashed potatoes for a rich blend of yam, sweet potato, and Irish potato. It’s the kind of baked comfort food that feels familiar but tastes unmistakably Caribbean.
What makes this Caribbean-style Shepherd’s Pie special is the ground provision mash. The yam gives it earthy depth, the sweet potato adds natural sweetness, and the Irish potato keeps everything light and fluffy. Once mashed with butter, milk, garlic, and cheese, it becomes creamy, silky, and sturdy enough to hold a hearty filling underneath. That filling is packed with plant-based protein, sautéed with onion, garlic, pimentos, tomato paste, dark soy sauce, and warm spices for a bold, savory flavor.
This vegetarian Caribbean bake delivers beautiful contrast: sweet + savory, creamy + hearty, soft inside with a lightly crisp golden top. It’s budget-friendly, filling, and perfect for meal prep, meatless Mondays, holiday spreads, or as a standout side for Sunday lunch. If you love shepherd’s pie but want a Caribbean version that celebrates ground provisions and island seasoning, this Provision Garden Pie is it.

Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a baking dish.
-
Boil the cubed yam, sweet potatoes, and Irish potatoes in salted water until very soft and fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain well. While still hot, mash with butter, milk, and minced garlic until smooth. Stir in cheese, salt, and black pepper, continuing to mash until fluffy and creamy. Set aside.
-
Drain and rinse pigeon peas and chickpeas. Pat dry and mash until mostly broken down but still slightly textured.
-
Heat oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Sauté onion, pimentos, and garlic until fragrant. Add carrots and cook 1–2 minutes. Stir in mashed peas along with smoked paprika, cayenne, and pepper flakes. Cook 2–3 minutes until lightly browned.
-
Add tomato paste, water, and soy sauce. Season with salt and black pepper. Cook another 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.
-
Spread half the provision mash in the baking dish. Layer the pea filling evenly over it. Top with remaining mash and smooth. Use a fork to score the top.
-
Bake 25 minutes until heated through. Broil 3–5 minutes until golden and lightly crisp. Let rest 10–15 minutes before slicing.
Note
Choose firm, fresh provisions for best texture.
For extra heat, add Scotch bonnet to the filling.
