Chocolate Date Syrup is a luscious, naturally sweet alternative to store-bought chocolate sauces. Instead of refined sugar, this recipe uses soft dates, simmered and blended into a silky base that pairs perfectly with rich cocoa powder. The result is a syrup that’s indulgent yet nourishing, with layers of caramel-like sweetness balanced by warm cinnamon, vanilla, and a touch of sea salt.
What makes this syrup special is its versatility, it can be poured over ice cream, pancakes, waffles, or cakes, but it also stirs beautifully into warm drinks like hot chocolate or coffee.
Beyond flavor, this syrup has practical benefits: it’s budget-friendly, free from refined sugar, and keeps well for weeks in the fridge or months in the freezer. The natural sweetness of dates gives it a rich body and smooth texture, while the cocoa brings depth and slight bitterness, making it a perfect balance of sweet and chocolatey without being overly heavy. This makes it ideal for meal prep, healthier desserts, or even gifting in a pretty jar.

CHOCOLATE DATE SYRUP
Description
This chocolate date syrup is smooth, thick, and naturally sweetened—perfect for drizzling over pancakes, stirring into coffee, or using as a healthy dessert topping.
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Start by soaking the pitted dates in hot water for 30 minutes to 1 hour, until soft and plump. Once ready, blend the dates with their soaking water into a smooth paste.
-
Transfer the date paste to a saucepan and set over low heat. Whisk in the cocoa powder and milk until well combined and silky. Add the cinnamon, vanilla, and sea salt, then increase the heat to medium. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, whisking occasionally.
-
In a small bowl, stir the cornstarch into 2 tablespoons of room-temperature water to make a slurry. Slowly pour this into the simmering mixture, whisking constantly to prevent clumps. Let the syrup simmer for 4–5 minutes, stirring regularly, until it thickens to a smooth, glossy consistency.
-
Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before transferring to a clean jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store in the refrigerator for 6–8 weeks or freeze for up to 3–4 months.
-
For plain date syrup: simply omit the cocoa powder.
-
For cinnamon date sweetener: increase the cinnamon to 2 ½ teaspoons.
Note
For best results, use soft Medjool dates, but Deglet Noor also works.
The longer the dates soak, the smoother the paste will blend.
Adjust sweetness by adding more dates or balancing with extra cocoa.
This syrup thickens slightly as it cools—warm gently before using if needed.
Perfect for drizzling, stirring into warm drinks, or gifting in jars.
